I know I did when I was a wellness pro. Yep, in case you didn’t know, I’ve been in your shoes and let me tell you, I’ve SO been there.
I wasn’t always a business and marketing coach. In 1999 I started my nutrition counseling practice. I was really passionate about the power of nutrition (even my mom had just overcome a bout with cancer using my nutrition wisdom!) and so I went back to school, got a degree in nutrition and opened up my practice to be able to help more people discover the benefits of healing foods.
I “hung up my shingle” and to my surprise, not much happened. I gave lots of talks, I advertised, I went to tons of local networking meetings, did a few corporate speaking engagements and I worked hours upon hours on my website. I was working myself to the bone.
I did okay. I would get some clients now and again. To be honest, just enough to keep me afloat. It’s a small understatement when I say I was working really hard.
For the first few years of my practice I was overworked, frustrated and mostly broke. And sadly, so were most of my colleagues. (It was like the blind leading the blind!)
I’ll save you from the rest of this depressing story by fast forwarding to the happy ending which is what I’m here to share with you…
Becoming a successful healer isn’t about working harder or just about having a lot of passion, nor is it about working smarter, it’s about doing things in the right way.
There’s an old saying “don’t work harder, work smarter.” It sounds good, right? Well, I don’t think that works.
I was working really hard, that was never my problem. I was really passionate too and that didn’t draw clients to me either.
I studied up on marketing and got myself a business coach and eventually started working smarter and I did start doing better, but not great.
So, here’s the greater truth: I was doing ALL the right marketing strategies, but you know what was off? I wasn’t doing them IN THE RIGHT WAY. And I bet you can relate.
